Cancer surgery hospital gets operation in Kabul

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Higher Education of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on Wednesday put into operation a center for the treatment of general internal diseases and cancer surgery in the teaching hospital of Aliabad.

Abdul Mutab Shinwari, the director of the Aliabad teaching hospital, said on the occasion that this center was built with the cooperation of the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Ministry of Higher Education.

According to him, this center has 40 beds and was built at a cost of more than 20 million afghanis.

Officials of the Ministry of Higher Education asked the specialist doctors who have left the country to return to Afghanistan and provide quality treatment to the citizens.

Meanwhile, Nada Mohammad Nadim, Acting Minister of Higher Education, aasked international institutions to cooperate in standardizing Afghanistan’s health sector. “The budget of the cancer center has been approved by the cabinet and its practical work is supposed to begin. We ask international institutions to cooperate with Afghanistan to standardize the health sector.”

On the other hand, a number of cancer patients welcomed the opening of this treatment center.

64-year-old Ekramuddin, who is suffering from cancer and is hospitalized in the teaching hospital of Aliabad, said that due to lack of money, he could not go to neighboring countries for treatment. He added: “I hope to be treated at theis center in Aliabad teaching hospital.”

Amin Gul, another citizen suffering from cancer who is hospitalized in Aliabad teaching hospital, said: “I went to different hospitals for cancer treatment and now I came to this center to be treated.”

Currently, there are only three cancer diagnosis and treatment centers in Kabul, Kandahar and Herat.

Based on the statistics of the World Health Organization, last year, 23,000 cancer patients were registered in Afghanistan and 16,000 of them died from this disease.
