KABUL (SW) – A number of flower and sapling sellers in Kabul say that their sales have increased this year compared to last year.

Wali Mohammad, a flower seller in Kabul city who has been in the trade for 18 years, is optimistic about the future of his work and says that this year he has invested more than 300,000 afghanis in the field of selling flowers and plants.

“We have different types of flowers and trees. It is people’s choice what kind of trees they take, they buy some fruitful trees and some unfruitful trees. We also have imported flowers, but some of them are our own that we bring for sale. Thank God, we are satisfied with our work.”

Mohammad Harun, another flower and sapling seller in Parwan II, Kabul, said he is happy with the increase in sales and the prosperity of his business, saying that he has nearly 30 customers a day.

“This year, compared to last year, things have improved, our customers are more on Thursdays and Fridays. People even come to the shop to have fun and see the flowers. We ask the people and the government to pay more attention to greenery.”

A number of residents of the capital, who have come to flower shops to buy flowers and seedlings, ask other citizens to take part in improving the environment of Kabul by planting flowers.

Lal Mohammad, a resident of Kabul, who came to one of the nursery shops, said: “It is a good thing for everyone to plant seedlings. Saplings and flowers refresh the spirit. For this reason, we come to buy seedlings and flowers every year.”

Shujauddin, who came to Kabul from Kunduz to buy flowers, said: “I came here from Kunduz to buy flowers, because flowers are good for mood and environment. My advice to others is to buy flowers, especially ornamental flowers.”

On the other hand, environmental experts say that planting flowers and seedlings is effective in preventing respiratory diseases, seasonal floods and underground water storage.

Abdulbasit Rahmani, an environmental expert, said: “Planting saplings is an important issue in the environment, which is done by people in most countries. From the moment a child enters school, this culture is taught to him and therefore, we must focus and invest in it. A healthy environment can create a healthy life and healthy people can perform better in other areas of life, including economy and politics.”

Every year, Kabul Municipality plants hundreds of thousands of fruitful and non-fruitful saplings throughout the capital. Last year, it also planted 250,000 saplings in the city.
