200 schools in Helmand have no proper buildings

LASHKARGAH (SW) – Mohammad Awad Ansari, the director of education in Helmand, has told Salam Watandar that among the 357 active schools in this province, more than 200 schools do not have a proper buildings and students are taught in the open air.

According to him, most of the school buildings in Helmand were destroyed during the wars in the past years.

“During the past wars, there were air strikes. In some districts, even one school does not have a building. Now only 100 schools in this province have buildings and the rest operate in rented houses. Or the students study in the open air.”

Meanwhile, a number of students in Helmand say tthat studying in schools without buildings has made them face educational and health problems both in the heat and in the cold. One of these public schools without a building is “Gohargin Noabad” public school in Nava district.

Mehboob Khan, a student at Gohargin Noabad public school in Helmand’s Nava district, which does not have a building, said: “We don’t have classes, we feel extremely cold in winter and feel hot in summer.”

Qasim, a student at Gohargin Noabad public school in Helmand’s Nava district, which has no building, said: “We don’t have classes and we sit on the floor. Most of the time, our lessons are canceled because of the cold and hot weather.”

A number of teachers in Helmand say that the inappropriate educational environment and dilapidated school buildings have a negative impact on the quality of students’ lessons.

Mohammad Amin, a teacher in Helmand, said: “Schools do not have buildings to teach students. Students cannot study in such an environment.”

Sediqullah, another teacher in Helmand, agreed: “On rainy days, neither students nor teachers come to school. This issue has a negative effect on the learning process of students.”

During the wars of the past years in Helmand, many schools were destroyed in this province and the process of providing educational services to students was also disrupted.
