KABUL (SW) – At least 1440 people lost lives or limbs to the remnants of the war across Afghanistan in the past one year.
Although the war of the past decades in Afghanistan has killed and injured more than three million citizens of this country but the ammunition left over from the devastating wars continue to cause havoc.
Nouruddin Rustamkhel, the head of mine sweeping at the Disasters Management Authority, told Salam Watandar that 120 people got killed or injured every month across the country, majority of whom are children.
According to the statistics provided by him, in the past year, on average, 1,440 people have been killed and injured due to the explosion of ammunition left over from the war in various provinces.
Rustamkhel said that the lack of funds is the most important challenge to the demining process in Afghanistan because with the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, aid in the field of demining to Afghanistan has decreased and aid in the coordination of this process has been completely cut off.
According to him, now, two international institutes and six domestic institutes are active in the demining sector in Afghanistan.
The lack of sufficient funds in the demining sector in Afghanistan has caused this department to fire 118 of its employees.
Bilal Karimi, one of the deputy spokespersons of the Islamic Emirate, said in this regard the officials of the Islamic Emirate want a comprehensive investigation, and later they will take steps to clear unexploded ordnance left over from the wars.
