Iran returns military equipment back to Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – Iran has returned the military equipment back to Afghanistan that was taken across the border by the security forces of the previous government.

The Bakhtar state news agency reported that a large number of military equipment, weapons and ammunition that had been transferred to Iran after the fall of the previous government,  had been returned to the country.

Bakhtar said that these vehicles and equipments were handed over to the caretaker government representatives at the port of Islam Qala last night due to the efforts of the officials of the Islamic Emirate.

Earlier, there were reports that military equipment and tools had been transferred and smuggled from Afghanistan to neighboring countries, including Pakistan and Iran, following the Islamic Emirate’s takeover of the country.

On the other hand, a number of helicopters and military planes were flown to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Acting Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqub Mujahid called on these countries to return Afghanistan’s helicopters and military aircraft to the country “very respectfully.”

But John F. Kirby, a spokesman for the Pentagon, told a news conference that the former Afghan government’s army would not be handed over to the Islamic Emirate. He said no definite decision had yet been made on the fate of these aircrafts outside the country, and that the Pentagon was working on that.
