KABUL (SW) – At least 70 young couple got married in a mass ceremony organized by a welfare trust in Kabul on Monday.

The mass wedding was sponsored by Selab Welfare Organisaton in Kabul. Officials at this foundation said the move was made to avoid the high cost of marriage for those who could not afford it.

Sayed Ahmad Selab said the couples were from different provinces and ethnic groups whose marriages had been arranged with the support of the private sector. He added that the couples who attended the ceremony could not afford to pay for their wedding due to economic problems and rising unemployment in the country.

He emphasized that the process of holding mass marriages will continue with the cooperation of this foundation.

The mass wedding ceremony has been welcomed by young couples. They said that the culture of holding mass weddings should be institutionalized in the society in order to avoid excessive expenses in the current situation.
