“Afghanistan’s free media under the Islamic Emirate is collapsing”

MONITORING (SW) – On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Amnesty International has expressed concerns saying that Afghanistan’s free media under the rule of the Islamic Emirate is collapsing.

Amnesty International has stressed that the vibrant media in Afghanistan must be allowed to grow. The organization called on the authorities to respect freedom of expression and the international community to protect this freedom.

According to Amnesty International, 6,400 journalists have lost their jobs since the Islamic Emirate took office. At the same time, 231 media outlets have been shut down, and many are facing security threats and financial problems.

Amnesty International added that 80 journalists and media workers have been detained and harassed during this period. The organization stated that female journalists suffered the most.
