Explanation sought over prolonged closure of girls’ schools

KABUL (SW) – Members of the civil society on Thursday sought explanation from the Islamic Emirate authorities over the prolonged closure of girls’ schools across the country.

A number of civil society organizations, parties and tribal council elders called on the Islamic Emirate to clarify the issue behind closure of girls’ schools in the country. .

The participants in this meeting said that the closure of girls’ schools has no Islamic or cultural justification. They called the closure of schools in the country a great loss and called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen girls’ schools as soon as possible.

Speaking on the occasion, a number of teachers of girls’ schools said that the decision by the Islamic Emirate was imposed on girls. They demanded that the viewpoint of the people be taken into account in major decisions.

Munawara Qureshi, female student of a closed school, termed the exclusion of women and girls from the society as blatant cruelty and un-Islamic decision and said that the Islamic Emirate should reopen the school for girls above sixth grade.

At this occasion, women’s rights activists accused the international community of being hostile to Afghanistan.

Monisa Mubarez, women rights activist, accused international organizations of choosing to remain silent, saying that the protection of the international community’s interests in Afghanistan has led to its silence.
