MONITORING (SW) – Decades of conflict, drought and the collapse of Afghanistan’s growing economy have created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis for children, said Paloma Escudero, the UNICEF’s Director for Global Communication and Advocacy.
In a series of tweets, Paloma said Afghanistan is witnessing how decades of conflict, drought and growing economic collapse are causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis for children”.
“UNICEF Afghanistan promotes the rights of children and women throughout Afghanistan and works to bring basic services to those who are most in need”, she tweeted.
“I met dozens of mothers at Paktiya Hospital in #Afghanistan. They all were seeking immediate help for their malnourished children. Time is of the essence to provide life saving treatment to one million Afghan children at risk of severe acute malnutrition”, she tweeted.
Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said in a Twitter post that Afghans are currently facing an unprecedented crisis of food insecurity and malnutrition, with women and children suffering the most.
The organization has expressed concerns about the situation of women and children in Afghanistan, saying they are bearing the brunt of the humanitarian crisis in the country. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) added that many children in Afghanistan work or beg outside their homes to support their families.
