World Bank, aid agencies urged not to politicize aid

KABUL (SW) – The Islamic Emirate has urged the World Bank and aid agencies not to politicize the aid and assistance programs for Afghanistan.

Abdul Bari Omar, Deputy Minister of Health Services of the Ministry of Public Health, today at a press conference in Kabul, called on countries and international donors not to link Afghanistan’s health sector to political issues and to continue their assistance in this area.

Omar said the World Bank has not resumed funding for the Covid-19 centers in Afghanistan. According to him, the World Bank has taken responsibility for financing these centers until 2024.

“We are not begging you (aid agencies), our compatriots know that our audience is the same foreign communities that have been here before, met us in Doha and in different provinces of Afghanistan. These were non-political people and our audience is the same non-political people that you were here, but you left everything to yourself.”

The Deputy Minister of Health Services of the Ministry of Public Health said that the World Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding with these centers for funding, but after the recent developments, has left everything alone.

Referring to child malnutrition, he said that more than two million children in the country are malnourished, one of the reasons being insufficient breastfeeding by mothers. The Deputy Minister of Health Services of the Ministry of Health asked doctors and other staff living abroad to return to the country and provide services to their compatriots.
