GARDEZ (SW) – A number of women in Paktia are calling on the authorities of the Islamic Emirate to provide women jobs in government departments as in the past.
In conversations with Salam Watandar, the women said there is a serious need for female police officers when going to offices for the identity card, passports and other civilian offices.
Palwasha, a woman in Paktia, said women need to be hired in some offices to respect and facilitate other women. “Afghanistan is an Islamic country with different traditions and customs, and in order to preserve Islamic values and traditions, it is necessary to employ female police in some departments,” she said.
Zarrina, another woman in Paktia, says the need for female police force is very serious, but the big problem is that most families do not want a female family member to work in the security services.
She calls on families to work together to solve problems and respect other women. She added that if the Islamic Emirate and families allow girls to work in the security sector, they will serve the community on the one hand, and provide security for women on the other.
Local officials in Paktia also acknowledge that the need for female police officers is very serious in some departments, especially for women.
Khaleqiar Ahmadzai, Paktia’s director of information and culture, says a number of sacked female employees of the former government have not yet returned to their posts. According to him, the central government should make a decision in this regard.
Ahmadzai told Salam Watandar that efforts are being made to create a safe environment for women by creating a suitable solution and for them to be called back to their duties.
“The final decision in this regard is going to be made by the central government and so far we have not received a clear policy in this regard. Once the central government has made a decision, it will be decided at the provincial level.”
In the previous regime, about 30 women in Paktia served in the police force.
