Locals embrace ‘easy marriage’ program in Farkhar

TALUQAN (SW) – In a bid to control the skyrocketing expenses of getting married in Takhar, the locals have agreed upon a set of rules.

People of Farkhar district in Takhar province have signed a resolution for abolishing the lavish expenses in marriage ceremonies.

The residents of Zaingard village in Farkhar district have agreed upon a written decision at a public meeting to put an end to the obscene customs of hindering easy marriages for their daughters and sons.

Many locals believe one reason for the spread of poverty in families here remained the high-priced dowry rates for girls, which leads to domestic violence and irregular migration of the youth seeking to earn quick money.

Ezatullah Tawhidi, a Farkhar tribal elder, send a text message to Salam Watandar saying that the people of the district, in coordination with religious scholars and mosque imams, were determined to do so in order to prevent outdated customs that have seriously damage their economy.

Tawhidi also added that in this public meeting, a decision was made that the total cost of the wedding was set at 230,000 afghanis with the main dowry fixed at 180,000 afghanis, and another 50,000 afghanis allocated for the cost of clothes and meals.

A number of customs have been abolished.

It is worth mentioning that last year in the villages of Khosdeh, Farangard, Hati, Wark, Lozdeh, the same ‘easy marriage’ program was implemented and so far hundreds of young people have been helped with it.
