38,000 Afghan civilians killed in past 12 years

KABUL (SW) – The US Embassy in Afghanistan has said in a statement that over the last 12 years of war, over 38,000 Afghan civilians have been killed and over 70,000 have been injured.

In the wake of mounting Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan, the US on Wednesday urged the group to end the ongoing violence and return to the negotiating table.

The US’ Chargé d’Affaires, Ross Wilson said in a series of tweets that firsthand accounts of Taliban offensives have been reported in different parts of the country and targeted attacks against civilians across Afghanistan.

“We call on the Taliban to end the ongoing violence and return to the negotiating table”, tweeted US’ Chargé d’Affaires to Afghanistan. He also quoted Ned Price, the State Department spokesman who said last week: “The world will not accept the imposition … by force of a government in Afghanistan.”

The Embassy said in a statement that the Afghan people have seen enough Afghan-on-Afghan violence.

“All Afghans – all Afghans – deserve the opportunity to go about their days – doing their jobs, attending schools, shopping in markets – without fearing for their lives”, it quoted the U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield as saying.

The statement further noted the US remained firmly committed to assist Afghanistan and the Afghan people.

“As President Biden said on June 26 “The partnership between Afghanistan and the United States is not ending … we’re going to stick with you.”  We will continue to support the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and will provide $3 billion in security assistance in 2022.  We urge an end to violence, respect for the human rights of all Afghans, and serious negotiations in Doha so that a just and durable peace may be achieved”.
