Analysts skeptical about President Ghani’s trip to the US

KABUL (SW) – As Afghan delegation led by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani landed in Washington for an official trip, analysts remained skeptical of the outcome.

Political analyst Rahmatullah Bezhanpoor said while commenting on the prospects of this official trip to the US that if the Afghan delegation strongly presented and defended a national and unified position, the US will be forced to reconsider its position on Afghanistan. He, however, said the delegation cannot compel the US to alter its course in Afghanistan.

He added that the US would urge Afghan leaders to work together and pave a way for an inclusive government to end the current crisis in the country.

Meanwhile, Hakim Nazim, another analyst, believed that the possible achievements of the trip will have a profound effect on the Taliban’s position. Nazim stressed that the visit, the crackdown by the Afghan forces against the Taliban and the popular uprising against the group would change the Taliban’s stance, to stop the violence and attend peace talks.

Analysts believe that if the Afghan delegation to the United States failed to get the desired results, the Taliban will continue to advance.

During the visit, President Ashraf Ghani will meet with US President Joe Biden and other senior US officials to discuss the continuation of cooperation between the two countries, said Latif Mahmood, deputy spokesman for the President.

He said the president would discuss with US officials the new chapter in US-Afghan cooperation, diplomatic relations, equipment and financial support for the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces, human rights issues and economic and development issues.

President Ashraf Ghani and a high-level government delegation including peace council chairman Abdullah Abdullah, first vice president Amrullah Saleh, and others reached Washington on Thursday amid rising violence in Afghanistan with the Taliban capturing districts in various provinces.
