Protesters in Maymana ask Dostum to pick new governor for Faryab

MAYMANA (SW) – Protesters in Maymana city on Sunday asked the Junbish party leader Marshal Abdul Rasheed Dostum to select a governor for Faryab province.

On the ninth day of protests against the appointment of new governor, the protesters staged an election to pick a popular governor, but eventually left the choice for Marshal Dostum, said the protesters.

Ehsanullah Qawanch, the leader of Junbish party’s youth wing, said the protesters handed over the authority to select a new governor to Marshal Abdul Rasheed Dostum. According to Ehsanullah Qawanch, they will continue their protests until the new governor takes charge.

Meanwhile, Saeed Ahmad Saeed, a senior member of the Junbish party, said efforts and talks are underway to end the protests and address the protesters’ demands.

Enayatullah Babar Farahmand, the deputy head of the High Council for National Reconciliation, announced about today’s polls through a Facebook post. “According to the decision of the Faryab Supreme People’s Council, representatives of districts, civil society, Ulema, women, political parties, youth, academics and the provincial council four people would be short-listed and referred to the presidency for approval”, he noted.

The situation in Maymana escalated when Junbish party’s leader Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum expressed opposition towards appointment of Mohammad Dawood as governor of Faryab. This situation has also raised concerns among Maymana residents.

Mohammad Dawood, who was not allowed by the protesters to take charge resumed his duty at a military facility instead of the governor house. He released a video statement to assure the people of Faryab that he has come to serve the province and wants to provide security and services across the province
