KANDAHAR (SW) – The ensuing deadly violence has taken its toll on children in Kandahar as health officials note 30 per cent increase in referrals of the youngsters.
Dr. Mohammad Sediq, head of the children’s department at the Mirwais Regional Hospital in Kandahar, told Salam Watandar that the number of children infected with various diseases has risen by 30 per cent this year compared to last year. He cited high temperatures, drought, war and neglect of families as the reasons for hundreds of children suffering from diarrhea, malnutrition and some other diseases.

In the first two months of this year, he said up to 6791 children from Kandahar city and some other areas were admitted to the hospital. According to Dr. Sediq, 1236 of the children were hospitalized and 69 of the bedridden children died.
Meanwhile, some women who have brought their children to Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar for treatment said they were worried that as their children suddenly suffered from diarrhea, fever, intestinal and ear pain. According to them, despite the treatment of children in the hospital, their health condition was not improving.
Nek Bakhta, whose youngest son suffered from diarrhea, vomiting and intestinal pain, said she had been in the hospital for the past three days. Another anxious mother, Noorya said her young son also suffered from diarrhea, vomiting, earaches and fever. According to her, the child was very unwell and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Doctors recommend that families pay more attention to their children in the face of global coronavirus pandemic, as well as drought-like situation in Afghanistan besides the ensuing war.
