100 security forces ‘surrender’ to Taliban in Baghlan

PUL-E-KHUMRI (SW) – Sources in Baghlan have said at least 100 members of the security forces surrendered to the Taliban amid surging attacks by the insurgents.

Reliable security sources in Baghlan, who did not want their identities to be revealed, told Salam Watandar that last night, more than 100 security forces with all of their equipment surrendered in central Baghlan district.

According to these sources, most of these soldiers surrendered to the Taliban without resistance.

The source added that after the security forces’ surrender, most areas of the Baghlan-e-Markazi district, including the old city and five security posts, fell to the Taliban while only the capital city is under the control of the government.

These sources warned that if the government does not act soon, the central Baghlan district will also fall to the Taliban.

Local and security officials in Baghlan have not commented on the matter. In the restive districts, telecommunication networks have been cut off.

Meanwhile, the Taliban claimed via a statement that more than a dozen of government forces with weapons and equipment had surrendered to the group last night. Earlier this week, Baraka district and two military bases in Baghlan-e-Markazi district fell to the Taliban.
