Parliamentary delegation from Pakistan returns from Kabul without landing

KABUL (SW) – A planned trip of a parliamentary delegation from Pakistan to Afghanistan was cancelled on Thursday due to security threats at Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Secretary of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) Abdul Qadir Zazai told Salam Watandar that the delegation had returned to Islamabad. According to him, Mir Rahman Rahmani, Speaker of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) spoke to his Pakistani counterpart Asad Qaisar by telephone and the head of the Pakistani delegation said that the delegation would visit Kabul soon.

Zazi added: “There were technical and security problems on the runway. When the plane approached the airport, it was not allowed to land for 20 minutes. It was a security problem, and not just this plane; four other flights were also delayed that is why the plane carrying the Pakistani delegation returned to Pakistan.”

“Speaker’s (Asad Qaisar) visit to Kabul postponed as airport was closed due to security threat. The plane was about to descent when the control tower informed of the closure of airport. New dates for the visit will be decided after mutual consultations”, tweeted Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan.

Qaisar was invited for the visit by his Afghan counterpart Mir Rehman Rehmani during a trip to Islamabad last year.
