Mawlavi Muneed calls for reforms ahead of proposed early polls

KABUL (SW) – Mawlavi Abdul Hakim Munib, leader of the Enqelab-e-Islami party, has criticized the idea of proposed early election.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said holding elections without reforming the electoral system would cause troubles in Afghanistan. “Going to the polls without fundamental changes and serious reforms will pose a serious challenge to the country that will be difficult to contain,” said Abdul Hakim Munib.

The leader of Enqelab-e-Islami party added that the lack of sufficient funds to hold early elections, the distrust of the people and politicians in the country’s electoral system, and the dissatisfaction of President Ghani’s political rivals with holding elections are major challenges ahead. According to him, securing peace in Afghanistan is the desire of all, but the Taliban need to give up war and come to the negotiating table to achieve peace.

This comes as Reuters reported that President Ashraf Ghani was likely to float the idea of early elections at forthcoming Istanbul peace conference. It said, as per the proposed peace plan, a six-month truce would be called ahead of polls for the top seat.
