Ulema express support for government, security forces

KABUL (SW) – Dozens of religious scholars in the western zone gathered in Herat on Tuesday to express support for the security forces and push for peace in the country.

This comes days after Mawlawi Mujibur Rahman Ansari, the preacher at the Guzargah Grand Mosque in Herat during his last Friday sermon said anyone supporting the current system of governance or indeed the security forces have committed ‘sin’.

The west zone religious scholars on Tuesday denounced these remarks by Ansari.

Khudadad Saleh, head of the Ulema Council in the Western Zone emphasized upon the unity among scholars at the conference. “Those who entice and invite people towards strife, discord, ethnic and religious differences are among the corrupts on earth.”

He stressed Islam preaches and promotes moderate views among people. He added there are no doubts that the members of the security forces are Muslims and guardians of the country. Saleh emphasized upon the need for an end to war, and prevalence of peace in the country. He also urged the parties to the conflict in Afghanistan to strive for peace.

Referring to the recent remarks of Mawlawi Ansari, another member of the Ulema Council, Mohammad Iqbal Asim said the scholars of the western zone have always pointed out shortcomings of the governance, but it has never called the rulers as infidels.

Abdul Qayum Zafar, another religious scholar, emphasized the current system of governance was purely Islamic nature. He stressed religious scholars should not cause chaos in the country.

Abdul Majid Samim, a professor of Islamic sciences at Herat University, told the conference that although there are many shortcomings in the current system of governance, however, no one should strive to uproot it. “Whoever is behind the podiums should speak to the people in a way that is good for them, and their words should not lead to disorder and hypocrisy in the country,” he said.
