Dozens of orphan children call for justice in Ghor

GHOR (SW) – At least 40 members of a single family of a war victim in Ghor province on Saturday called for justice.

At a protest demonstration, Hawa Gul – who has been taking care of 40 members of her family for more than a year – gathered with her grandchildren in front of the governor’s office this morning to call for justice. The woman said she was struggling with the children following the killing of their sole breadwinner by the Taliban last month.

She said that following the killing of her son by the insurgents on charge of collaborating with the government, no one has come forward to support them.

Blaming the provincial administration for failing to provide support, Hawa Gul said she can no longer manage to take care of the need of the orphan children.

Ahmad Zia, a young boy whose father and three uncles were killed by the Taliban, urged the government to provide them with education. He also urged the Taliban to stop killing people.

When contacted, Mohammad Arif Aber, spokesman for the governor of Ghor, said the local administration had sent the family’s petitions to aid agencies and was working on a plan to provide education for the children. He added that the governor had instructed the provincial labor and social affairs department to admit the children to the public orphanage.

According to officials from the provincial office of the Independent Human Rights Commission in Ghor, 125 civilians have been killed and over 200 injured in clashes between government forces and the Taliban in the province since the beginning of this year.
