Ghani calls for actions against perpetrators behind recent attacks

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has directed authorities to identify and punish the perpetrators behind the recent terrorist attacks on civilians as well as political and social activists.

According to a statement issued by the presidency, he issued stern directives and guidance to the security and defense institutions in order to provide the best possible security to these activists. “The president instructed the relevant authorities to identify the perpetrators behind all the recent terrorist attacks, including the terrorist attack on the civil activist Farishta Kohistani, and punish them for their heinous acts,” the presidency said in a statement.

A day earlier, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of Hezb-e-Islami, said that the government and security forces had failed to secure Kabul and that people should be allowed to carry weapons for their security. “The government could not provide security with ‘paid mercenaries’, we would do this voluntarily. The government should provide security for government facilities, offices, palaces, banks, airports and roads, and leave the security of the constituencies to the people of these constituencies”, he suggested.

The assassination of journalists and civil society activists has provoked a wave of condemnation from various quarters, prompting domestic and international reactions.
