Coronavirus vaccine set to arrive in Afghanistan in 7 months

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Public Health has announced that the first shipment of the coronavirus vaccine will arrive in the country in seven months.

The MoPH spokesman, Akmal Samsur told a news conference that the first shipment of the vaccine would arrive in Afghanistan in seven months. The World Bank is among the sources to fund vaccination drive in Afghanistan. He added that by the next two years, nearly 40% of Afghan citizens will benefit from the vaccine.

Samsor said the country was faced with the peak of the second wave of the virus in the 49th week of the outbreak. He added 1,687 positive cases have been recorded in the country in this week. Samsor said the number of positive corona cases has risen by about 10 per cent since last week.

The second wave of the coronavirus began about a month ago in Afghanistan. The government initially shut down wedding halls, schools and universities to contain the virus.

On Wednesday, the government officially launched the National Meal Program to help poor families in Panjshir and Nangarhar provinces.
