FAIZABAD (SW) – Local officials in Badakhshan have confirmed that the Maimi district of the province has fallen to the Taliban.

Kambiz Qorbani, governor of the Maimi district, has confirmed the fall of the district to the insurgents.

According to a well-placed source, the Taliban have killed the district police chief as well as the head of NDS and a number of other security forces. The source added that a number of security forces are still fighting the Taliban, but do not have enough equipment to retake the district.

Ahmad Javed Mujaddidi, a member of the provincial council, has confirmed these reports.

Spokesman for the police headquarters, Sanaullah Rouhani has acknowledged that a number of security forces have been killed, but did not comment on the number of casualties. He called the killing of Maimi police chief as a rumor.

Badakhshan’s Maimi district has been under siege by Taliban fighters for some time now.
