Covid-19: Herat witnessing up to 5 deaths daily

HERAT CITY (SW) – Amid second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Herat province has been witnessing 3 to 5 deaths to the virus on daily basis.

Official figures by the health directorate suggest up to 33 patients of Covid-19 lost their lives in the past eight days in the Shedai Hospital of the province alone.

Spokesman for the health directorate, Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai has expressed concerns over the mounting rate of infections to the virus. He said based on the figures provided by the surveillance teams, 24 positive cases and 39 suspected cases of the virus were registered here last month.

He said last month 1724 individuals were tested for the virus and 688 proved positive. He added the surge in number of positive cases prove the second wave of the Covid-19 is gaining momentum.

The Ministry of Public Health has said in the past 24 hours 121 new positive cases were registered that included 8 from Kabul and 2 from Nangarhar provinces. According to the MoPH’s spokeswoman, Massouma Jafari, the total number of positive cases have reached to 45,963.

Officials are urging people to wear facial masks and ensure social distancing.
