Call for ‘urgent action’ to defend journalist, press freedom in Afghanistan

MONITORING (SW) – Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has written to Richard Bennett, the UN’s new special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, calling for urgent action to defend journalists and press freedom in Afghanistan, where arbitrary arrests are on the rise and a climate of fear has taken hold in all media outlets.

KABUL (SW) – Press freedom activists and journalists believe curbs are mounting with every passing day under the rule of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan.

Bamyan women activists arrested, interrogated

BAMYAN (SW) – Local sources in Bamyan, who did not want to be identified, told Salam Watandar that intelligence forces had arrested and interrogated 11 women since Saturday on charges of disrupting a program in support of the Islamic Emirate.

Call for the release of press freedom activist

KABUL (SW) – The Afghanistan Journalist Safety Committee (AJSC) has called for the immediate release of Ghulam Rabbani, its provincial member in Ghor province, by the forces of the Islamic Emirate.
