The United Nations has said that more than 70 million people worldwide are deaf, as it marks International Day of Sign Languages.
In a post on X on Wednesday (Sept. 23), the UN said that deaf people use more than 300 different sign languages to communicate with others.
According to the UN, 80 percent of deaf people live in developing countries. The organization highlights the importance of recognizing the rights of deaf people and protecting and promoting those rights, including ensuring full access through national sign languages.
September 23 was designated as International Day of Sign Languages by the UN General Assembly in 2017 to raise awareness of the importance of sign languages and ensure the full realization of the human rights of deaf people.
