The Ministry of Information and Culture, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, stated that the Islamic Emirate believes in the significance of the media in society and its role in promoting public awareness and strengthening relations between citizens and the government.
Khubaib Ghufran, spokesperson for the Ministry said on today (Sunday, May 3) that the Ministry of Information and Culture remains committed to supporting the media and improving access to information in Afghanistan. He adds,
“We call on all media outlets to fulfill their responsibilities within the framework of Afghanistan’s principles and religious and cultural values, the Islamic Emirate’s media policy, and the protection of individuals’ privacy.”
According to him, 144 media outlets in Afghanistan were granted operating licenses over the past solar year to support the media sector.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has emphasized the protection of freedom of expression and journalists as one of the fundamental pillars of peace.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the agency said that the manipulation of information weakens social cohesion and gradually erodes public trust. UNAMA further emphasized that access to fact-based information strengthens accountability, constructive dialogue, and the protection of human rights.
May 3 was designated by the UN General Assembly in 1993 as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and reaffirm states’ commitment to respecting freedom of expression.
