Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, said on the occasion of International Women’s Day that women hold only 64% of the legal rights enjoyed by men.
He wrote today (Sunday, March 8) on his X account that equality cannot be achieved when men and women do not have equal access to their rights.
Guterres added that the dignity, opportunities, and freedom of all women could only be secured by challenging discriminatory laws and practices and by protecting the progress that has already been achieved.
March 8 was officially recognized by the UN in 1975 as International Women’s Day, with the goal of promoting gender equality, combating discrimination, and celebrating women’s achievements.
