Islamic Emirate paints bleak picture of UNAMA as it nears end of mandate

KABUL (SW) – As the one-year mission of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) approaches its end, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, says the organization has failed to achieve success in Afghanistan.

Mujahid adds that UNAMA has created a “misleading perception” of Afghanistan by publishing negative reports about the country.

He further stated: “The progress, stability, security, achievements, and peace for the people of Afghanistan have not been considered by UNAMA. Instead, it has always tried to highlight negative issues, exaggerating minor problems to shape a distorted view.”

Mujahid emphasizes that the dissemination of incorrect information about Afghanistan to the United Nations by UNAMA is detrimental to both the country and the organization.

UNAMA’s mission is set to conclude in 12 days, and the United Nations Security Council will decide whether to extend the mission.

Some political analysts view UNAMA’s mission in Afghanistan as significant, noting that the organization has played an active role in monitoring humanitarian aid and securing international assistance for the people of Afghanistan over the past three years.

Najib al-Rahman Shamal, a political analyst, said: “During its years of activity, especially in the past three years, UNAMA has had a positive impact. It has monitored and controlled humanitarian aid and played an effective role in garnering global support.”

In March of 2024, the United Nations Security Council extended UNAMA’s mandate until March 17, 2025, through a resolution.
