Islamic Emirate forms committee to regulate media on terminologies

The Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC) under the Islamic Emirate has established a committee aimed at reforming and standardizing words, terms, phrases, and titles commonly used by the Afghan media outlets.

Khobaib Ghofran, spokesperson for the de-facto government’s MoIC, told Salam Watandar that these terms, phrases, and titles should be used in alignment with the national and Islamic identity of the citizens.

He adds: “A committee is formed to standardize the words, phrases, and titles used in media activities. These terms and titles must reflect the national and Islamic identity of the Afghan people, and the terms used in media activities should align with these policies.”

Meanwhile, officials from the Afghan Journalists Union consider the formation of this committee to be a positive step.

Hafizullah Barekzai, president of the Afghan Journalists Union, states: “The creation of this committee carries a positive message. It is the responsibility of the Academy of Sciences, the Faculty of Literature at Kabul University, and relevant institutions to create a dictionary similar to that of Iran. Afghanistan needs such efforts for the preservation of its culture.”

However, Ali Akbar Ahmadi, a reporter for “Radio and Television Rah-e-Farda,” expresses concerns about potential government interference in media operations. He believes the committee should not take actions that conflict with the freedom of media activities in Afghanistan.

He adds: “In my opinion, this is government interference in media operations. Media outlets are already careful to avoid using foreign terms. We hope the government will take actions that do not contradict the work of the media outlets.”

Earlier, officials from the Ministry of Information and Culture had requested that media outlets use national terms and refrain from using foreign words.
