KABUL (SW) – Authorities from the Directorate of Public Health in Badghis have confirmed a new polio case in the province.

This case represents the first polio diagnosis in Afghanistan for this year (2025), raising concerns about the continued fight against the virus and the need for strengthened vaccination efforts across the country.

Mohammad Yosuf Najmi, the Director General of the Public Immunization Department at the Badghis Health Directorate, confirmed the news to the media.

He stated that a polio test had been conducted on a five-year-old girl in the province, and “the result came back positive”.

Najmi further explained that the girl is from the village of “Qoruto” in the Bala Murghab district of Badghis province.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries in the world where polio remains endemic.

This is despite the fact that, in response to the ongoing polio threat, the Ministry of Public Health under the Islamic Emirate has repeatedly implemented nationwide vaccination campaigns aimed at protecting children across the country.

Previously, some vaccinators expressed concern that a significant number of children might be missing out on the vaccine due to the lack of door-to-door vaccination efforts. They highlighted that some families remain indifferent, not bringing their children for vaccination.
