UN pushed to scale up development projects

KABUL (SW) – Din Mohammad Hanif, the Acting Minister of Economy of the Islamic Emirate, has called on the United Nations to focus more on implementing development projects in Afghanistan this year, according to an official from the ministry.

Mr. Hanif has raised this issue during a meeting with Roza Otunbayeva, Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). He emphasized that the successful implementation of development projects could help reduce poverty and unemployment in the country.

“In this meeting, discussions were held on the effective and transparent implementation of humanitarian aid in line with Afghanistan’s economic needs and development priorities. The Acting Minister of Economy stressed that organizations should focus their activities on the implementation of development projects in Afghanistan this year,” spokesperson for the Ministry of Economy Abdul Rahman Habib explained about the meeting.

In parallel, the United Nations has recently established an economic working group to coordinate economic assistance for Afghanistan.

Despite the Ministry of Economy repeatedly urging the United Nations over the past three years to focus on implementing development projects to address Afghanistan’s fundamental economic challenges, the international community has primarily concentrated on sending humanitarian aid to the Afghan people.

Economic expert Eraj Faqiri, argues that improving Afghanistan’s economic situation requires investment in infrastructure.

“Focusing on and investing in infrastructure can gradually improve the economic system and lead to social welfare, job creation, and a favorable environment for domestic investment,” he said.

Since returning to power, the Islamic Emirate has initiated several development projects and repeatedly stated that these efforts have contributed to a reduction in poverty levels in Afghanistan.
