Suspension of US aid begins to hurt the needy in Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – The suspension of the United States aid to Afghanistan has led to the halt of operations for some local and international organizations, said spokesperson for the Ministry of Economy under the Islamic Emirate.

The ministry’s spokesperson Abdul Rahman Habib, explained, “Some of these institutions, which were receiving support from the U.S. and its Development Agency, have temporarily stopped part of their activities.”

He emphasized that the Islamic Emirate is prepared to manage the situation resulting from this halt in aid.

After taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump suspended financial aid to all countries, including Afghanistan, for three months. However, the U.S. Department of State announced on Tuesday, that lifesaving humanitarian assistance would be exempt from this suspension.

Economic experts warn that the suspension of U.S. aid could cause irreparable harm to the citizens of Afghanistan.

Qotbuddin Yaqubi, an economic expert, stated that the Islamic Emirate can mitigate the impact of the suspension by implementing effective programs. He added, “The suspension of U.S. aid could trigger a chain of crises for Afghanistan and even threaten regional stability and global security. It is crucial to consider a sustainable solution for this issue.”

Previously, Abdul Latif Nazari, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Economy, had mentioned that, following the suspension of U.S. aid, the activities of 50 international organizations and aid agencies in 28 provinces had been halted.
