The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has requested $149.4 million to protect vulnerable individuals in Afghanistan in 2025.
On Thursday, January 23, OCHA stated on its X account that the protective environment in Afghanistan is “deeply fragile” this year.
OCHA noted: “The protective environment in Afghanistan in 2025 is deeply fragile. $149.4 million is needed for essential support.”
OCHA further outlined the allocation of funds as $37.8 million for public protection, $36.2 million for children protection, $48.8 million for survivors of gender-based violence, and $21.9 million for mine clearance programs.
The UN agency emphasized that the protective needs in Afghanistan have increased due to restrictions imposed by the Islamic Emirate, the large return of migrants, and natural disasters, particularly affecting women and children.
Additionally, OCHA reported that 22.3 million people in Afghanistan are in need of protective assistance, while humanitarian organizations are targeting 6.3 million individuals for aid.
OCHA also highlighted that nearly half of the population – around 22.9 million people – will require humanitarian assistance in 2025 due to limited capacity to meet their chronic and acute needs.
