Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate de-facto government, stated that the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, to Kabul has been positive and productive.
FM Muttaqi added that key topics discussed during Araghchi’s visit included water rights, issues related to Afghan migrants, enhancing trade relations, and strengthening diplomatic ties between Iran and Afghanistan.
“Overall, the Iranian Foreign Minister’s visit to Afghanistan was positive,” Muttaqi said.
He said, “It was discussed how trade between the two countries can be further strengthened. Another important topic was transit, specifically how to make better use of the Chabahar port and improve facilities there. The discussions on this matter were promising. Another issue was Afghan migrants; Iran has also shown willingness to allow the gradual return of migrants to Afghanistan, which is a positive agreement.”
The Islamic Emirate’s acting foreign minister also assured that the de-facto government had pledged to ensure Iran’s water rights from the Helmand River. “Water is an important issue for both Afghanistan and Iran. However, the position of the Islamic Emirate is that we do not interfere with God’s blessings; the people of Sistan and Baluchestan are our brothers. The challenges that have arisen are due to drought. When water is available, even if there is no formal agreement, we will provide it out of humanity.”
At the conclusion of his one-day visit to Kabul, Seyed Abbas Araghchi spoke to Iranian media, stating that the main issues discussed, including securing water rights from the Helmand River, migrant concerns, and border security, remain significant challenges between the two countries.
Araghchi arrived in Kabul on Sunday, leading a political and economic delegation, and held talks with the acting Foreign Minister, the Ministers of Defense, Industry and Commerce, and the Prime Minister of the Islamic Emirate.
