Hundreds of Afghan prisoners transferred from Iran

Officials from Afghanistan’s Office of Prison Administration (OPA), under the Islamic Emirate, report that over the past three years, 1,100 Afghan prisoners have been transferred from Iran in two phases.

Mohammad Nasim Lalahand, spokesperson for the OPA, said that according to the Afghan Embassy in Iran, currently between six to eight thousand Afghan citizens are serving sentences in various Iranian prisons.

He added, “Over the past three years, 1,100 Afghans who were imprisoned in Iran have been transferred to Afghanistan through the efforts of the Afghan Prisoners’ Transfer Committee.”

Meanwhile, a high-level judicial delegation from the Islamic Emirate, led by Abdul Malik Haqqani, the administrative deputy of the Supreme Court, traveled to Iran on Friday for talks on Afghan prisoners’ issues.

The Supreme Court announced that the visit aimed to strengthen judicial cooperation between Afghanistan and Iran, ensure the rights of Afghan prisoners in Iran, enhance goodwill between the two countries, explore alternatives to prevent the execution of Afghan prisoners sentenced to death in Iran, and pursue the extradition of prisoners.

Earlier, Iran’s Human Rights Organization reported that in the first 10 months of 2024, Iran executed 49 Afghan citizens.
