Flood victims in Ghor face harsh winter with limited resources, aid

A number of internally displaced people (IDPs) from natural disasters in the flood victim camp at “Pushta-e-Gamorak” in eastern Firozkoh, the capital of Ghor province, are complaining about limited access to basic living necessities.

They say that although the de-facto government of the Islamic Emirate has provided them with 100 residential houses, the lack of drinking water, food, and adequate fuel has made it difficult for them to survive the cold winter.

Burhanuddin Nazari, a displaced person in Ghor, says that the cold weather and shortage of fuel are threatening their survival. He adds: “The weather is cold, we don’t have drinking water, there’s no clinic, and we don’t have fuel. Our request from the Islamic Emirate and humanitarian organizations is to pay attention to our situation and distribute aid as soon as possible, because if we don’t receive help, we might perish.”

Khadija, another displaced person, says: “We are shivering from the cold. Sometimes we find firewood, and sometimes we can’t. If we receive fuel assistance, our problems will be solved.”

While some organizations have distributed aid to the victims of natural disasters in Ghor, flood survivors from this year’s floods report that the assistance is insufficient, and they need more help.

Nezamuddin, a flood victim from this year in Ghor who spends his days and nights at the IDP camp, says: “We want heating materials to be provided to us so that people can be covered this winter and be saved from death.”

Mohammad Rasul Karimi, another flood victim in Ghor, says: “Some help arrived in the first days to a few people, but our request is that the people affected by natural disasters be supported.”

Meanwhile, officials from Ghor’s Disaster Management Department say they are working with the National Disaster Management Authority and partner organizations to provide more aid to flood victims in the province.

Abdul Wakil Obaidullah, the head of Ghor’s Disaster Management Department, says: “We have supplies in the warehouses, and they will be distributed soon in nearby areas. We have requested the central government to send us supplies for the winter, and we hope no natural disasters occur this winter. However, if they do, we are prepared.”

The spring floods this solar year in Ghor have displaced many families and caused significant financial losses.
