Islamic Emirate claims significant progress in combating corruption in Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) –  The Islamic Emirate officials stated that substantial progress has been made in combating corruption in Afghanistan over the past three years, and that corruption has now been reduced to near “zero”.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the de-facto government, emphasized that the Islamic Emirate continues its efforts to fight corruption in all its forms in Afghanistan.

“During the Republic era, Afghanistan was ranked first or second in global corruption. Now, corruption in Afghanistan is close to zero, and if any is still observed, it is at a very low level and under investigation by judicial authorities,” he added.

The United Nations, however, has noted that many global challenges, inequalities, and social deprivations are closely linked to the issue of corruption.

In a recent report, the UN announced that the focus of the 2024-2025 International Anti-Corruption Day campaign would be on the role of young people as advocates for raising awareness about corruption and its impact on societies.

In a part of the report, it is said that “corruption deprives many young people of educational opportunities, career prospects, and participation in public life.”

However, Neyaz Mohammad Hamdard, a public policy expert, argues that to effectively combat corruption and eliminate it worldwide, governments must adopt comprehensive and systematic policies.

“Public awareness of the different types of corruption needs to be raised. In addition, strict laws must be implemented, as these measures can have a significant impact on reducing corruption. In many countries, young people—who are the active force of society—often become victims of corruption,” he said.

The UN also stressed that combating corruption is vital for the future of one-quarter of the global population.
