Exclusive: AI gaining popularity among Afghan youths

MONITORING (SW) – Artificial intelligence (AI), as one of the advanced and exciting branches of technology, has gained significant attention in recent years among Afghan youths.

This technology, which focuses on simulating human intelligence in machines, is rapidly expanding in the modern world and is being utilized by many young people in various aspects of life.

To examine the application of AI among Afghan youths, Salam Watandar interviewed 20 young individuals, including 10 males and 10 females, in Kabul. The results show that these young people use AI mostly for work and educational purposes. Among the interviewees, 8 use AI for work-related tasks, and 12 use it to ease their educational processes.

Abdul Rauf Rahimi, an economics student, uses AI to facilitate his studies. He says, “I search for many economic issues in AI, and sometimes it also brings related abbreviations, which are quite useful for me. I mostly use tools like ChatGPT.”

Sayed Anwar, an engineering student, also shares the benefits of using AI in his life: “It answers all the ‘whys’, ‘hows’, and ‘whens’. It serves as a reference resource that helps us in any field. I’ve used it especially in engineering and some other areas related to information technology.”

Ahmad, a young man involved in graphic work, also uses AI to improve his work. He says that AI is a great assistant in his professional field. “Tools like ChatGPT and other AI websites can help in various fields, such as graphics, online trading websites, and content generation sites,” Ahmad adds.

Learning different languages, getting consultation, and entertainment are other applications of AI among young people. Zahra, a resident of Kabul, shares her experience of using AI for learning: “I’ve been using AI for a year, primarily for translation, solving homework questions, acquiring information, and learning foreign languages like English.”

Another resident of Kabul, Diba, also shares: “I’ve been familiar with AI for about a year. I use it for getting consultation, answering questions, and generating articles. I work with GPT-4 for these tasks.”

However, the use of this technological tool has raised some concerns. The dominance of technology, invasion of privacy, fostering laziness in humans, and job loss are major concerns for some of the users.

Zohra Bagramwal described her concerns about the consequences of using AI extensively. “Many jobs might disappear in the future. Also, if we always rely on AI, our creativity may diminish, and the personal information we input into AI could end up violating our privacy.”

Similarly, Shirzad said that besides its benefits, AI has a negative impact on the personal growth of young individuals. “This could make people lazier, as they rely too much on AI and do all their tasks through it. This could lead to a situation where, when AI becomes paid and no longer free, these individuals might not be able to function properly without it,” he expressed.

Despite these concerns, experts in the technology field assert that AI may replace humans in certain tasks in the future, but due to its lack of reasoning and thinking abilities, AI and other technological tools cannot truly compete with humans.

Mohammad Musa Mohammadi, a technology and IT expert, says: “AI has no understanding or feelings, and it cannot think like humans. It cannot ever replace humans. Humans can think, create, and invent things, but AI only makes decisions based on the data we input. It serves humans, but it doesn’t have the capability to create or invent.”

Enayatullah Alokozai, spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Islamic Emirate, told Salam Watandar that the ministry has plans to hold awareness programs to promote the use of new technologies like AI across Afghanistan.

“The ministry is currently working to raise awareness among the public and youths about using technological tools like AI. At the moment, many people are using ChatGPT for work and educational purposes.”

Over the past half-decade, AI, as a branch of computer science, has emerged in the world of technology, growing rapidly and gaining many users in various countries.
