“Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations has been usurped”

KABUL (SW) – Officials of the Islamic Emirate have stated that the seat of Afghanistan’s permanent representation at the United Nations is the rightful property of the Afghan people, and the United Nations must hand it over to their representative.

Hamdullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, said that for more than three years, Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations has been usurped, and this situation must come to an end.

“We demand that Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations be handed over to its representative; until now, this seat has been usurped, and this situation must change so that Afghanistan can have its rightful place at the United Nations,” he added.

On the other hand, Sohail Shahin, the representative of the de-facto government to the United Nations, has said that in order for Afghanistan to be included in international meetings and participate in global affairs, its permanent seat at the United Nations must be transferred to the Islamic Emirate.

“Afghanistan now has an Islamic system that enjoys public support; according to global standards, this is a legitimate system; Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations should be handed over to the Islamic Emirate so it can represent Afghanistan in international forums and responsibly engage in global issues,” he said.

After the rise of the Islamic Emirate, Nasir Ahmad Faiq kept Afghanistan’s permanent representative seat at the United Nations. Earlier this year, Afghanistan lost its voting rights in the United Nations General Assembly due to its failure to pay its membership dues.

Over the past three years, the de-facto government has repeatedly asked the United Nations to transfer Afghanistan’s permanent representative seat to the Islamic Emirate’s representative. However, the United Nations has not yet made a decision regarding the transfer of Afghanistan’s seat at the organization.
