KABUL (SW) – Uzbekistan’s head of Intelligence Agency Abdusalom Abdumavlonovich Azizov has stressed the importance of supporting and cooperating with Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, held on Wednesday, September 4, Azizov stated, “The government in Afghanistan is combating international terrorism within its capabilities. Afghan intelligence forces are at the forefront of the fight against ISIS and have achieved significant results. Therefore, we should not leave our Afghan partners to face this issue alone.”
Azizov also highlighted the need for a unified approach among SCO member countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to address the shared threats of terrorism.
Although the official confirmation of a representative from Afghanistan has not been provided, but images released from the SCO summit show representatives from the Islamic Emirate attending the meeting.
Participants at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit have described the security situation in member countries and the threat of terrorism as complex. They emphasized the need for serious and unified efforts to address these challenges.
During the summit, Ruslan Mirziyoyev, Director of the Regional Anti-Terrorism Center of the SCO, said: “In the rapidly changing geopolitical processes, there are new challenges threatening the sovereignty and security of SCO member states and other countries. These threats primarily stem from ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and other terrorist organizations.”
Evgeny Sisayev, Head of the Anti-Terrorism Center for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), also mentioned: “The current Afghan government is undertaking extensive measures to ensure security, peace, and stability in the country. They have implemented border control initiatives aimed at preventing the infiltration of foreign militias.”
In light of this, experts emphasize that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is focused on addressing security concerns among its member states.
Mujadaduddin Khurasani, an international relations expert, told Salam Watandar, “In summary, the goal of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is to achieve a clear and coordinated approach in combating international terrorism.”
Uzbekistan is among the countries that continue to maintain relations with Afghanistan under the ruling of the Islamic Emirate, and has consistently worked towards expanding these ties.
