79th UN General Assembly set to address global challenges, including Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly is set to commence in just three days, bringing together world leaders in New York City.

The assembly, which will run from September 24 to 30, is expected to address major global challenges, including the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, with Afghanistan also being a significant topic of discussion.

Experts hope that this session could pave the way for alleviating Afghanistan’s political and economic isolation. International relations expert Ajmal Zurmati said, “Discussions about Afghanistan at the UN General Assembly could help reduce economic and political isolation and create a dialogue for addressing the humanitarian and economic challenges facing the country.”

However, he also emphasizes that the UN currently lacks a comprehensive and clear approach to addressing the situation in Afghanistan, making it difficult to find immediate solutions for the country’s plight.

Zurmati noted, “The absence of a unified approach among UN members regarding Afghanistan has prolonged its challenges. The UN has yet to adopt a comprehensive strategy based on humanitarian principles and its own charter.”

Another international relations analyst, Wali Forozan, criticized the UN’s role in global problem-solving. “The UN is ineffective in addressing global challenges. Why should we expect much from such organizations? Afghanistan is indeed isolated, but that isolation may be preferable to reliance on ineffective institutions.”

Outside Afghanistan, rising global tensions and the UN’s inability to effectively address issues like the situation in Gaza have further eroded confidence in its capacity to establish a global order.

Wali Forozan said that the alignment of the United Nations’ approaches and policies with the interests of a few countries has hindered the organization’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities on the global stage.

“The UN pursues the interests of the five permanent member states, and the laws, regulations, norms, and standards set within the organization are often aligned with the desires of these countries, especially the U.S,” he added.

As the 79th UN General Assembly convenes, Afghanistan finds itself unable to participate due to its lack of a recognized government (Islamic Emirate) within the UN framework, highlighting the ongoing challenges the country faces on the global stage.
