KABUL (SW) – In the past year, 316 new schools have been established throughout Afghanistan, according to a report released by the Ministry of Education. The new schools include 106 public schools and 210 private schools.
Karamatullah Akhundzada, the Deputy Minister of Islamic Education, said that over 1.445 million students have been enrolled in both public and private schools over the past year. “Additionally, 152 primary schools have been upgraded to secondary level, and 119 secondary schools have been elevated to high school level,” he added.
Currently, there are more than 10.914 million school students receiving education in 18,337 public and private schools across the country.
Akhundzada also highlighted that the ministry has printed over 16.188 million textbooks for students from grades 1 to 12 in the past year.
“In addition, 617,978 textbooks have been distributed to Islamic education centers, and 294,641 literacy books have also been printed and distributed,” he said.
The Ministry of Education is sharing these achievements while acknowledging that girls beyond grade six have been restricted from attending school for the past three years.
Mansour Ahmad Hamza, the ministry’s spokesperson, commented, “Mr. Mujahid has repeatedly explained the situation, and we adhere to it; schools remain closed to girls above grade six until further notice.”
Other achievements of the ministry in the past year include addressing over 3,000 complaints, issuing 303,000 certificates to school graduates, monitoring the education process of over 21,000 instructors, and implementing capacity-building programs for them.
