MONITORING (SW) – The Save the Children organization reports that in the first half of the year 2024, at least 38,000 Afghan citizens have been displaced due to climate change, with more than half of them being children.
In a report published on its website on Tuesday, Save the Children stated that the number of displacements in Afghanistan in the first half of 2024, has surged compared to the same period in 2023 year.
The report cites drought, rising temperatures, landslides, and storms as the main causes of displacement among Afghan citizens.
“Kandahar in southern Afghanistan has been severely affected by drought. Following the drying up of hundreds of wells and other water sources, people have migrated to other areas. In the village where we worked, about half of the families have left their homes due to severe water shortages,” the report noted.
Save the Children also highlighted that Afghanistan is the sixth most vulnerable country to climate change and has the least capacity to adapt and cope with it.
Previously, Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) had announced that combating climate change in the country requires global cooperation and the resumption of unfinished projects in this sector.
