JALALABAD CITY (SW) – Residents of Jalalabad, the central of Nangarhar province, call for the expansion of their city to cope with increasing traffic congestion and the growing population.
They urge the Jalalabad Municipality and other relevant authorities to focus on the city’s development by modernizing intersections, roads, drainage systems, and sidewalks to alleviate urban overcrowding.
Obaidullah, a taxi driver in Jalalabad, highlighted the improvements made to certain roads, saying, “The road in front of the police headquarters used to be unpaved, but now it’s paved, which has significantly reduced traffic jams and accidents. Similar improvements should be made to other roads.”
Abdul Majid, another driver, added, “Some roads that were previously narrow have now been widened. We urge the government to widen more roads and solve the people’s problems.”
The Jalalabad Municipality acknowledges the increasing urban congestion and has announced plans to address this issue.
Abdul Raziq, the mayor of Jalalabad, stated that many roads in the province would be reconstructed in the coming year.
He added, “The road is 300 meters long and has sidewalks on both sides, costing nearly 11 million Afghanis. It is 3.5 meters deep and includes pedestrian walkways. The process of repairing roads in the city will start in the new year.”
Recently, traffic congestion in Jalalabad city has intensified, with residents attributing this to the influx of people from other provinces, making it sometimes difficult to walk even on the sidewalks.
