The Ministry of Repatriations and Refugees (MoRR) has reported a grim toll from the deadly floods that struck Baghlan on Friday. According to official figures, 315 lives have been lost, and 1630 individuals have sustained injuries.
In addition to the human toll, the floods have wreaked havoc on the region, with 2665 homes either fully or partially destroyed, along with the loss of 1000 livestock.
Mohammad Ibrahim Omari, head of Repatriation and Refugees Directorate in Baghlan, surveyed the affected areas, noting significant casualties in villages such as “Shaikh Jalal” and “Shahrak-e-Sulh” in central Baghlan district, as well as in “Sharshar” village in Burka district.
The MoRR has reminded that the statistic is preliminary and there is a possibility of increasing casualties and financial losses.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan also confirmed that over 300 lives have been claimed, and more than 1000 homes have been destroyed by the floods in Baghlan alone.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed solidarity with the flood victims, emphasizing the urgent need for emergency assistance. Despite these efforts, complaints have arisen regarding the timeliness of rescue operations and the provision of essential supplies to affected areas.
