Book exhibition launched in four provinces

KABUL (SW) – A unique book exhibition to promote trend of reading among the youth has commenced in Ghor, Ghazni, Panjshir and Balkh provinces to commemorate the book week.

Officials in these provinces say that thousands of books on culture, literature, history, economy, society, religion and politics have been displayed in these multi-day exhibitions.

Ata Mohammad Sahu, the director of information of Balkh Directorate of Information and Culture, says that more than 30,000 books have been displayed in the exhibition in this province. He adds: “We are trying to promote the culture of reading books among the residents of Balkh because studying is a way for every country to progress.”

Abdulhai Zaeim, head of Directorate of Information and Culture of Ghor, says: “All the important books that were at the level of Ghor, religious books and contemporary sciences are displayed in this exhibition. Citizens can visit this exhibition and use these books.”

Nasrullah Malekzada, head of information and culture of Panjshir, says that holding this exhibition can increase the motivation of young people to read books.

“In order to encourage young people to read books and to celebrate World Book Week, we have organized a large exhibition in the center of Panjshir, where thousands of books were displayed for two days,” he added.

On the other hand, a number of visitors to these exhibitions say that holding book exhibitions provides a good opportunity to encourage young people to study and develop the reading culture.

Mohammad Ahmadi, a resident of Ghor, says: “We support holding such exhibitions. We hope this culture gets institutionalized until our young generation is brought to reading books because we can find knowledge only with books.”

Sirat Akbari, a resident of Balkh, also said: “Holding a book and Holy Quran exhibition is the main need because instead of reading books, young people are busy with internet and social networks.”

In the past two years, several small and large book fairs have been held in Kabul and a number of provinces with the aim of developing the culture of reading and raising the motivation among citizens to read books.
