IE officials stress importance of continuing international humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – After the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy for Afghanistan announced that the United Nations institutions and donor countries had begun reviewing the process of providing aid to Afghanistan, officials in the Ministry of Economy of the Islamic Emirate have reiterated the importance of continuing humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan from the UN and the international community.

Abdul Rahman Habib, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Economy, tells Salam Watandar that the continuation of humanitarian aid from the UN and other countries to Afghanistan is effective in fighting against food insecurity.

“For the countries that have supported Afghanistan in the last two and a half years and have been direct and without the intervention of government departments since the beginning, the Ministry of Economy has tried to facilitate the operation and implementation of their projects through the necessary coordination between sectors. The continuation of humanitarian assistance has been effective for circular economy and fighting food insecurity,” he said.

Habib emphasizes that the effectiveness of humanitarian aid, could be enhanced by implementing infrastructure projects aimed at job creation and establishing a sustainable work environment for the people.

On Monday, Keren Decker, the charge d’affaires of the US Embassy in Afghanistan, posted a statement on X, saying that UN agencies and donor countries are reviewing the process of providing aid to Afghanistan.

“United Nations agencies and donor countries met to evaluate the effectiveness of assistance in Afghanistan; they are working together to continue the assistance and cooperation to Afghanistan,” the statement added.

A specific time and place for the start of this evaluation is not determined; Dicker, however, emphasized that the main focus of it is on transparency and monitoring of aid.

Last week, the United Nations announced that more than 23 million Afghans need humanitarian aid, while this organization has received a small part of the financial promises of the donor countries.
