Countries ready to promote alternative crops over poppy cultivation in Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – Roza Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has announced that several countries are prepared to assist Afghan farmers in transitioning to alternative crops instead of poppy cultivation.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock shared on its X account, quoting Otunbayeva that she met with Attaullah Omari, Acting Ministry of Agriculture on Monday. During the meeting, Otunbayeva urged the de-facto government to collaborate and share the alternative poppy planting plan with the organization.

During the meeting, Omari has asked for an augmentation of UN assistance in the agriculture and livestock sector. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in distributing agricultural seeds, managing water, forests, and natural resources, as well as promoting high-income plants.

The Acting Minister of Agriculture has also urged the United Nations to allocate a suitable budget for female farmers, highlighting that over 50% of agriculture and livestock farming in Afghanistan is carried out by women.
